Bonfires and Fireworks

We are learning new things everyday... this week we were educated on a small part of the Parliament's history. November 5, 1605 Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the House of Parliament. The attack was scheduled for when King James I of England and multiple parliament members were inside. Needless to say the attempt failed, and he was later arrested, tortured and executed. Ever since the Britons have celebrated this day ever since. Traditional celebrations have been bonfires and fireworks. As it is not public holiday, most celebrate on the closest weekend.

Almost all councils have some sort of celebration, we wondered down to the Wandsworth Council, at BatterySea Park in the south of London. There were thousands of people huddled into this park... there were no lights, glow sticks were a popular item. Along one side of the park were food stands and places to buy drinks, but the queues were super long. After queueing for a hot hog roast sandwich, with stuffing and applesauce, we were perfectly positioned to view the fireworks.

There was an amazing display of fireworks for about 30 minutes. It was choreographed to different songs, my favourite was Devil went down to Georgia!  haha who knew it was a international hit!

The bonfire was unfortunately short of picture worthy, but it was an awesome night overall. We had the pleasure of enjoying the night with several friends. I have to say, I am finally starting to feel settled and at home here. Despite the consent wrong turns and re-calculations on the City Mapper app, I no longer feel as though I am a complete tourist. haha Making friends and having regular outings in and about London is wonderful!
